Alan R Makey Webmaster
Biography
- Born in 1942 I attended Wincheap and St Dunstan's Schools. In 1979 I became a founder member of Canterbury in Bloom and was successful in obtaining 80,000 Bulbs from the Dutch Bulb Federation for the City of Canterbury and these were planted with the help of the Parks Department and many other volunteers including many children from the local schools. I served as Treasurer and Press & Publicity Officer for this organization. I was truly proud to be dubbed Mr Canterbury in Bloom during this time.
With a career in a number of Companies I finally worked in the Garden Centre Industry with Denne's of Wincheap, Canterbury and also Kent Garden Centres of Maidstone, a short period in Chislehurst with a private company and then with Toomers of Cirencester, and then with Norton Ash Garden Centre in Norton, Nr Sittingbourne. During this period I became heavily involved in the advertising of Norton Ash Garden Centre in the local press and with Radio Advertising on local radio, Invicta Supergold /Coast AM and recorded these adverts myself in the studio.
Following four heart attacks in 1990 I took early retirement and soon after volunteered in several posts for the Kent Family History Society for which I am still involved with. I served as Chairman for ten years (1998-2008) and as Hon.Editor from 1995 to date.
I am also Honorary President of the Kent FHS Canterbury Branch, a 3 year appointment.
I am also delighted and proud to be the President of the Wincheap and District Allotment and Gardeners Association based in Canterbury.
I have three Children, Russell (not seen since a toddler, as was adopted - Mother Helen Williams), Christa (Mother Joan Makey) and Alan Jr. (Mother Margaret Makey).
Although retired now I still have my main interests in Photography and Family History, having produced privately in 1994/1995 my own Family History entitled 'The Three Continents of Makey' which went around the world to those Makey's connected with my own tree.
